Local Residents and Park Users for a Green Heart of Hackney
London     June   Newsletter
Fields    Come along to our next meeting, Tuesday the 11th. of June at 8pm.
  User  Group   We have arranged to meet upstairs at the Pub on the Park, Martello St. E8
Chair  Mike Martin    mobile phone  0775 2833 487   fax 020 7241 3373    e-mail <mike101.martin@virgin.net>;

Please note that because of the Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday
the meeting has been put back a week to the 11th of June.

Hackney Parks Forum

We have now elected a representatives and a deputy for the Forum meetings.

More Vandalism

David Dedinger reported the further vandalism of the fields toilets. We were promised by John that he would try to get stainless steel replacements, but ceramic WCs went back again and have been smashed already. The moronic vandals may be having a smashing time but this costs money which is lost from general park funding.  This seems like a waste of time and money. It was mentioned that in other parks simple notices proclaiming "Concealed CCTV in action" has stopped a lot of vandalism.

Hackney Cultural Forum

With the recent council electoral landslide and the introduction of a new type of organisation; a council cabinet consisting of 9 members and a leader (to be replaced by a NEW powerful Mayor in October) making all the decisions. We may possibly see many new initiatives.  We all hope that the public gets improved services and facilities from these changes.

The Councillor responsible for parks is Guy Nicholson with his responsibility named as "Partnerships, arts & leisure". The council decided to invite cultural representatives to form a Cultural Forum to give support for the funding and development of infrastructure and cultural activities.

The Hackney Cultural Forum's initial meeting was held on the 21st of May. Appropriately all the community groups within Hackney involved in art; theatre; music; ethnic culture; leisure; recreation; sport; built environment and out of school learning, were invited to discuss how we could co-operate to achieve improvements in these areas.

This was followed by an election of representatives for a sub-committee to work with the council, to promote these aims. The parks being allowed only one representative, Dave Mackey the chair of the Hackney Downs User Group and the Hackney Parks Forum was elected. One representative is hardly enough for such a vast and important facility, used by thousands.

Junior Football Training

Marcel Matthews, an experienced football coach, informed the last meeting that he is training junior footballers (6 to 12 year olds) on the London Fields junior pitch, near the Lido, opposite the Gayhurst Road School playground. Marcel trains juniors on Saturday mornings, between 10 and 12 noon. There is a charge of £1-50.

They hope to have fun, combining some gentle mulching with walks, wood working and kite making. They will also be asking people about their favourite species, what birds, plants and insects are associated with the open spaces and parks people enjoy. This is part of consultation about Plans to improve wildlife value of Hackney's woodlands, parks, waterways, pond and wetlands.
